Q: My 2004 VW GTI VR6 needs coolant, the manual calls for G12 A8D, how much does it cost and do I have to mix it?
My boyfriend has a 2004 Volkswagen GTI VR6 and the coolant level is low and I'm afraid there will be problems if it stays that low. The owner's manual calls for G12 A8D anti-freeze coolant mixture and I know I can buy it from the VW, AUDI and a few other foreign car parts stores but I was wondering around how much it's gonna cost me. The car hasnt been in for service at the dealership in a while, thats why the coolant level is so low, so there's no worry about a leak or anything as the cause for it being low. I'm just a "little" bit more on top of things than he is, so that's why I'm doing all of this and with that in mind if anyone knows anything about what i'll need to actually do in terms of refilling the coolant, etc. please let me know. I was wondering, does it come from the dealership in a concentrated form? or is already mixed with water so I can literally just open it up and pour it in the tank? Any help would be much appreciated! Spare me the sarcastic remarks please. = ) Well hmmmm... I'm still waiting for the VW dealership to call me back, you think that wasnt the first thing that crossed my mind? Anyways, who says they're gonna tell me the truth, they'll give me their price, say i can buy it from them and probably try to get me to bring the car in. I'm trying to get this done without having to take the car in cuz that will cost money, and take time, etc.

A: The only place I have ever been able to find it is at the dealership (or a few places online). You should just be able to walk into the parts dept and tell them that you need the G12 coolant. It will probably be between 15 and 20 bucks. It does need to be mixed with distilled water. How low does it show on the overflow tank? You may just be able to top it off with the coolant if it isn't too low. Whatever you do, do not use anything other than G12. I have been told that if you try to mix anything different with this stuff it will turn brown and gel and cause all sorts of issues. (I am planning some tests to see how this works. My boyfriends car has G12 and mine is supposed to have G11, but it didn't when I bought it.)

A: VW is cheaper as far as maint cost and parts. The 300 is extremely tune sensitive and requires a lot of attention to detail to run properly and maint and parts are expensive if your can't do it yourself. If your unfarmilar with the z, then stay with the VW. I would check the maint records on the z. IF its had the 60k maint package done thats a good start. Also check the the top of the alternator for any signs that the high pressure power steering hose is leaking. I'm a z lover and I say if you know what your getting into, go with the z. If your not then stay with your VW. A good source to get some info on the Z is WWW.TWINTURBO.NET. good luck

Q: How do I change the headlight on 2001 VW GTI VR6?
The main light on passenger side burned out. Have replacement. Can't tell if I need to twist old light out or just pull straight out. I don't want to break anything. (This is the main light that goes behind that paper looking cover thing.)

A: u need to take it out, the whole assembly then theres a clip in the back take it out and take the plastic off as u take the plastic off u will notice the bulbs and take it out.

Q: Is the VW GTI VR6 a reliable, good running car?? And how fast is it??
I hve chosen to save up money to buy a 1996-1997 GTI VR6 and i was wondering how good of a car is it. I have heard that its reliable, runs perfectly, is fast, and is just a overall good car. I would like to know if anyone out there has one, and how they like it, and tell me the bad side of it too.

A: After working with VW's over a 25 year period (on/off) from 1980 to 2005, I think I can offer some insight into your question. Firstly, yes, the engine is reliable enough. It's a pretty tough piece of metal whose main drawback is a lack of low end torque; you have to rev the motor up for any performance. The standard 4 cylinder motor is actually quicker to 20 mph or so than the vr6 (both with standard transmissions). Get the engine above 2500 rpm or so, then it starts to come alive. It's an excellent match to the manual transmission, not so good with an automatic. The generation of VW you are talking about is overall, a good one. No side airbags, but still a fairly safe car given the state of the art in 1996. The only drawback with the motor is the chain tensioner for the second camshaft; its a variable valve timing set up, using a chain tensioner operated by engine oil pressure to change the cam chain length/tension that in turn changes valve timing. If the oil isn't changed regularly, the tensioner can stick and cause the cam chain to rattle. They aren't difficult to replace, so cost is not a major concern. What is a major cost is the cam/crank chains, if they should ever require service. To replace this you need to pull the transmission, the chain cover, then replace the chains. Not fun, however, I've only seen 3 of these need replacement in the dealership, so you shouldn't worry that this is a common fault per se. If your vehicle has the climatronic climate control, these are also known to have issues; the temp sensor is by the drivers' knee, which is why the cup holder for these is so shallow and is pointed away from the driver. Other issues, the vacuum controlled power door locks can fail; the plastic vacuum lines can age crack, causing the vacuum pump in the trunk to run all the time and overheat causing them to fail. And as one writer pointed out, the coil packs can also fail. However, by and large, the vehicle is very reliable, just be sure to maintain it according to the factory requirements and also, just be sure to run the vehicle on the recommended premium fuel and I'd also suggest running synethnic oil, preferably the Castrol GTX for the longest life on the motor. Hope this helps, a car nut.

Q: Where can I take my VW GTI VR6 for high quality Engine upgrades in the West Michigan area?

A: I don't know about West Michigan, but if anyone tells you to head for Traverse City to the VW dealer, DON'T. They tried to scam a friend of mine by charging $1000 more than they were supposed to.

Q: Starting Problem with 98 VW Golf GTI VR6?
I have a 98 VW Golf GTI VR6. I had just stopped at home for a minute, and went back out to start the car, and nothing. No click, sounds, nothing at all. I had replaces the starter in May of this year, so I had it tested, and it is fine. Still, nothing. It was suggested that it could likely be the starter switch. The radio on the way home that day did come on and go off a few times(which is why that was suggested). Would you agree with it being the starter switch? If not, what would you suggest? If so, can you tell me how difficult it is to repair?

A: Not too difficult.

Q: Recommend me to buy: VW GTi VR6 or Honda Civic EG6 Hatchback?
I have a 98 four door VW Golf right now but im looking for a Sportier 2 door hatchback for my next car, which one will u recommend me out of the two?

A: Try the Civic. It's very light and has tons of aftermarket support, not to mention the engine swap possibilities. Good Luck

Q: hey i have a 02 vw gti vr6, i hit a puddle and it wont start?
i waited outside for 2 hours still didnt start so called a towtruck and its now sitting in my garage, the radio is dead ( its aftermarket) and the clock and miles reset so should i wait for a couple of days to let it dry or did i get water into my engine and any suggestions i should try myself before paying 100 dollars just for an inspection, thanks

A: Check the oil level first; make sure its not containing signs of water in it, you'll know because it can become "milky" or brown in colour. Sometimes the water will just "float" above the oil and not intermix. Assuming that you've checked that and its ok, if you want to try and start it, check the fusable links to make sure they aren't blown, check the fuses for the electronic engine control and fuel pump. If they are ok, you can remove the spark plugs to try and crank over the engine. The idea here is that if the engine is hydro-locked, when you crank over the motor the water in the the cylinders will come out of the spark plug hole. HAVING SAID THIS, I DON'T RECOMMEND THAT YOU CRANK OVER THE MOTOR OR TRY TO DIAGNOISE THIS YOUR SELF!!! See the paragraph below..PLEASE! Generally speaking, if the electrical side of fuses and fusible links are ok, DO NOT CRANK OVER THE MOTOR.. its best that a technican check the vehicle out. It may cost you up to 1 hour's labour at the posted rate, but that is better than damaging the motor. If you have tried to crank over the motor already, you may have a problem. I haven't seen many motors hydro-lock over the years, but, I have seen a few. If the motor is hydro-locked up, you could have majour engine damage inside. Tow the vehicle to the local VW specialist or dealership, making sure you leave a note attached to the steering wheel NOT TO CRANK OVER THE MOTOR.. WITHOUT TALKING TO THE OWNER FIRST!!!!!!! It is a known fact that some VW's have a low air intake tube for the air cleaner/intake system. In a deep enough puddle water can get sucked up into the intake and seize the motor. I have always cautioned VW owners to drive slowly thru standing water... you don't know how deep the water is or have the water splash up high enough to get sucked into the engine. I wish that I could give you better news than that; I wish you all the best. Hope this helps, a car nut.

Q: who would WIN drag race VW GTi VR6 or Integra type R?
who would win a VW GOLF GTI VR6 vs ACURA INTEGRA TYPE R both stock. who would win quarter mile race. mk3 gti vr6 vs a 1998 integra type r

A: As much as I love my Integra, stock for stock, the VR6 would win. It has 200HP and 195lbs. of trq. The Type-R only has 195HP & 130lbs. or trq. But remember, the Type-R at the time was the best FWD handling machine and only 3 other cars at that time outhandled it (Ferrari was one of them) but not anymore though.

Q: On 98 vw gti Vr6 I keep hearing a rattling noise from the engine compatement . Any idea what could it be?
the ratlling noise comes and goes. You can hear it but its not loud.

A: how many miles??? common problem on a vr6 is timing chain tensioners, that loosen up at about 80-90k...some last as long as 120k ...... ok to keep driving for a bit, about a 1k job for a shop to fix.....

Q: Bmw 328Ci vs. VW GTI VR6?
So i'm looking at getting my second car what car would be a better buy a 2000 bmw 328Ci for $5,500 with 136,000 miles or a 1996 vw gti vr6 with 80,000 miles for $5,300 both cars in great condition

A: Keep looking. The BMW is a great car to drive when it is working right, but there is a reason why a car that cost $38,000 is now only $5,500. When I was a service writer, I saw those cars all the time, and at 138,000 miles, the owner gave up at the prospect of having expensive work done for the 2nd or 3rd time. My best friend has a 2001 325Ci that he bought new. Since the warranty ran out, he has spent about $5,500 a year replacing front lower control arms, numerous sensors, electrical components, the radiator, and countless other parts that BMW once made to last but are now maintenance parts. He bought a new Tacoma so that he has something that he can count on to get to and from work. As for the VW, you don't want to go there. Take what goes wrong on the BMW and add half shafts, heater cores, and an engine that doesn't have a reputation for great coolant circulation or durability. If $5,500 is your car buying budget, chances are you're not going to be happy the first time you look at a $3,000 repair bill. Good luck with your search.

Q: Mechanics and car experts - VW GTI VR6 clutch issue?
Have an '02 VW GTI VR6 6-speed with a re-occurring clutch issue. About a year ago the clutch seemed to be losing pressure and needed to be pushed further and further to the floor to dis-engage. A master cylinder was deemed the problem and replaced. It worked for about 9 months then the same problem cropped up. Garage deemed it a faulty part and replaced it. In a couple of weeks, it started acting up again. This time a new clutch was installed. Got the car home, (but thought the clutch felt funny) and the next day the car wouldn't move (clutch would not disengage) at all. Towed back to the shop. Any ideas? Thanks!

A: I say shotie shop.. find some where else to take it.. some shops just throw parts at car problems in stead of finding and fixing the actual problem. They may not have actually put in a new master cylinder and my have just rebuilt your original one...and charged you for a new one cost them like $5.00 in parts to overhaul it and charged you $50.+ for a new part. It should only need adjusting and nothing more. I would be worried if they were to tell you it needs another part. Tho it may need a slave cylinder. A slave cylinder would be the small part the moves the clutch lever at the transmission. That's the only part they may not have replaced.. It shouldn't cost you anything to readjust it.. should have been done right the first time.. your car is to new to be having those parts ware out... good luck Tim

Q: what is the easiest way to get a ball joint off of a 1996 VW GTI VR6?

A: Well if they are anything like I have seen, then there is usually a cotter pin holding a castle nut in place. just remove the cotter pin and loosen the nut. You will then need what is called a pickel fork to seperate the two pieces. assembly would be the reverse, with a new cotter pin. Of course what I have described may not apply to you paticular vehicle but they are all similar.
