A: In the US they were BBS RC Mesh wheels, and yes, all VR6 cars were 5 lug. The regular non-VR6 Gtis were 4 lug, but they used a different VW alloy wheel. You can buy BBS RC wheels (not the VW ones) which are the same with a 4 lug pattern but you may pay more, they are a pretty rad wheel. Look at www.tirerack.com and look up the wheel.

Q: where does the immobiliser connect into the wiring loom(ecu) in a vw golf mk3 '96?
I have a mk2 golf with a mk3 engine i have just put in, the engine starts spark fuel etc then as soon as it starts the ecu cuts out the spark and the engine dies, from searching google i have found this is most likely due to the immobiliser. (which came with the engine but i haven't connected because i don't know where). Thanks

Current car is a 1997 VW Golf CL Mk3. It's a petrol 1.6liter engine. I was actually looking at a same year model A4. The golf is a 97 model, so the A4 donor is a 97 as well. Its very hard to find VW donors here. Easier to find Audis.

A: I checked the parts on a US model A4 and US model MK3 and they are different. I can only assume that the CL(European) version would be the same. Although VW's and Audi's of the same years tend to share alot of similar components, something like ABS wouldn't be shared. The ABS system runs off a computer, and the Audi's are usually more advanced than their VW counterparts.

Q: VW Golf MK3, 1996 : wont start then turn lights flash once and shshsh noise comes from dashboard. Any idea?
Hi, i try to start my VW Golf MK3. The engine may turn once or twice then nothing. Then the turn signal lamps flash once (on the dashboard and outside of the car), a strange shshsh noise comes from the dashboard and the speedometer needle bumps up and down. The code 'IN 01' has been showing for a couple of months now but I ignored it. The battery sounds flat but what I want toknow is what my VW is trying to tell me. thank you for your patience. I did check for an hour on the internet about similar question but nothing was found.

A: That sounds like the starting or charging system. Check to make sure you have a fully charged battery and check the battery connections. If that all looks ok, then I would check the starter and solenoid. If the engine is turning over a couple of times that would make me think that there was not enough juice to start it. If the charging and starting systems check out, there is one more thing you can do before calling VW to come and get it. Unhook the negative post on the battery and let it set for about 5 minutes and then reconnect it. This will reset the on-board computer and if it is the computer being out of sync, then it should start, but be for-warned, that this is only a temporary fix. If it does start up you may want to go ahead and get it in the shop and have them run a diagnostic on it to see if maybe the computer or another component needs to be replaced. Q: What fuse on a 1995 VW Golf MK3 controls the dash lights?
The dash lights went out because of a short. I fixed the short and now I do not know how to fix the dash lights to turn on again. I figure it must be the dimmer control or a fuse. I ran through all of the fuses on the inside of the cab and they seemed fine. anyone have any suggestions?

A: See if the lights blow out! The cluster is very easy to remove. I replace mine with blue leds!!!

Q: Where can i get a vw golf mk3 cab roof cover? And can i change 4 stud hubs to 5 studs?
when the roof is folded down am looking for a cover to fit over it, any ideas?? Plus am looking to change my wheels from 4 stud to 5 stud, can this be done??

A: the second part: YES!!! first you'll have to find a donor vehicle for the bolts. It seems really simple to just swap out the axles and put on five bolts, but the manual labor and your personal time, not including if you have a shop do the work, will make it seem like a tough project. just stick with it. I'm actually in the process of converting my 1981 Porsche 924 from the factory four bolt config. to the 83-on five bolts. it definitely makes it easier to put on newer technology brakes. Big Red

Q: Steering problem on my Mk3 VW Golf it has Power steering.?
My vw golf mk3 has developed a steering problem. I have replaced the pads and the disks all round. It seems to be pulling to the left and gets worse as the speed gets to ariund 60 mph. I have had the wheels balanced and the tracking done. Why is it doing this any ideas. The tyres ALL have 30 p.s.i of air in them as well. It is a 1997 year model

A: if the problem came up just after change rotor and pads, the left pulling can be that the left piston is stuck or doing some preassure against the pad. try this before take your car at the garage: 1- Open brake fluid cap a little (not completely open, just a twist to let it breathe) 2- remove the caliper and pads (left side) 3- pump the brakes just a little. 4- apply brake or carb cleaner directly in to the piston (do not use WD-40). 5- Open vacuum valve and pump brake ounce (bad sign if the the fluid not drain out of the valve) 6- If you loss some brake fluid, proceed.... 7- use a caliper/pad spreader to force the piston back against the caliper (u can use a C-clamp). DONT TRY TO USE A HAMMER. 8- re-arm the pads and torque the caliper bolts to 20 ft/lbs max, if you dont have a torque wrench, that means not too tight. 9- pump breaks 3 times. ounce you finish with this you must bleed the entire brake lines, this is very important cause for sure you got some air in the lines. i hope this works better than my english (sorry about the poor grammar).

A: You get very slim maybe, and that is foremost dependent upon whether the exhaust manifolds are identical, if by some remote chance the are, the next question is how well do the pipe hangers line up and / or are you going to have to create custom hangers???

A: From the underside of the panel. They are held on by just one thin section nut (which now will be well seized and need a squirt ot WD40).

A: Hi. under the bonnet you'll see a tag in green with numbers on, its like a chassis tag. the colour code will be on there, what you could do is put a piece of paper over the whole tag then with a pencil lightly go over the tag so an inprint of the tag goes on to the paper & take that into the paint shop. or drive it in! ha! cheers ; )

Q: Replacing speakers in VW Golf mk3?
I wonder if someone can help? I'm looking to replace the factory fitted speakers in my Golf mk3. Those in the front door panels and dash. Now, i'm no hands on person so can I buy some speakers, rip out the old ones and just drop in the new ones? Keeping the original wiring loom with the plastic connector block at the end of the cables? Got a budget of about £100 - £150. Haven't got a scooby about co axial and component speakers! Cheers!

A: Yes you can just rip out and replace. The door speakers are standard round 6.5" (17cm) speakers. The issue you will have is quality speakers have a better/larger surround (for increased throw) so you may have a problem putting the grills back on. Tweeters can be dropped into the dash mounts no prob. Think the rears are 6x9s but you may want to leave as backfill with a small amount of fade... or not! Coaxial is just a mid and tweeter in one. Component is mid and tweeter split - but will need a crossover... except the Golf has already sorted that by having component speakers in the front. To get any real difference in sound you will need a better head unit so presuming you buy a Sony unit for £80 (if you want a nice one with the USB inputs... and who doesn't?!) and then coaxial (or mids only) for £55, that leaves £15 for the adapter plug to fit Sony to Golf Mk III. That should sort you out a little but you'd be better spending more and getting a sub/amp as well.
