Q: How do you remove the rear bumper/fender from a VW Golf Mk4?
This afternoon I attempted to fit a fixed towbar to my Golf Mk4. I removed the rear light clusters and all visible screws below and above the bumper and also in the wheel arches. However, despite further tugging I was still unable to remove the bumper. Does the inside panel have to be removed as well? I saw no screws for this. I don't want to cause any damage to the nasty plastic fittings, there must be a way of doing this properly. I did see some beige square pegs below the light clusters deep inside, are these involved? Many thanks.

A: With much research, I have compiled a DIY for removing the rear bumper on Golf/GTIs and Jettas. Like the front bumper, they are similar but still different. Both involve removal of the tail light assemblies, as there are bolts under the tail lights. There are also bolts under the bumper and inside the wheel wells. Tools I recommend: - socket wrench with 3"(inch) and 1'(foot) extension. I used a 1/2" drive. - 8mm socket - 10mm socket - T25 and T20 TORX sockets - #2 Philips screwdriver - small screwdriver - small punch First, locate the 8mm bolts holding your tail light assemblies. For ease of access on my GTI, I removed the amplifier/CD-changer rack. On Golfs/GTIs, the driver's side assembly has one bolt which is really buried behind the there. If you have the factory Monsoon amp, you can remove it by unscrewing the 2 Philips screws, then sliding the amp away from the rack. A couple of 10mm bolts and one T20 Torx screw hold the two piece rack in. You will see 2 of the 8mm bolts, and the third one is inside a rectangular hole. If you drop this bolt, don't worry, as if you pull up the carpet a bit, you'll find the bolt there. On the passenger side, the third bolt can be located by looking for a slight cut out in the sheet metal. You can see that cut out in the first picture, in the lower left corner(removed temporarily). The driver's side should come out after you remove the bolts, but the passenger side assembly on Golfs/GTIs has a metal pin that wedges into a rubber grommet right at the bottom corner of the assembly. Slowly work the pin out by twisting and pulling gently towards the side of the car. Pictures have been temporarily removed, sorry! After you remove the taillights, you'll see there is 1 T25 Torx bolt and a plastic rivet with a pin in the middle(at least on the Golf/GTI). Use the small screwdriver to poke the plastic pin through the rivet, but make sure you know where it went if you plan to reuse the rivets. (I personally mangled it because I didn't realize I could poke it through.) After poking the pin through, you can remove the fastener by wedging the small screwdriver between the bumper skin and the rivet. It will pop out. I didn't put the rivets back on, as I figured there were enough bolts holding the skin on. Remove the 6 T20 screws in the wheel wells, 3 on each side. Unbolt the 2 (Golf/GTI) or 3 (Jetta) T25 bolts under the valence, and then the 2 T25 bolts where the tail lights were. If you plan to remove the skin from the car, there is a plug near the driver's side tail light for the rear license plate on Golf/GTIs. If you are just adjustiing the bumper skin, you don't need to unplug it. After removing the bolts and rivets, the bumper skin will slide off rearward. Below WERE images from the manual. The first one is the Jetta and Golf rear bumpers, the second one is a more detailed scan of the Jetta rear bumper, but as mentioned before, is very similar to the Golf/GTI rear bumper. i found this at the link below

Q: golf vw mk4 whats a plenum and where is it located?
got a mk4 1999 golf gti 2.0l 5 speed where is the plenum some people told me i got a problem there . my car wont start it will start but shuts offf right away.

A: The plenum chamber is part of the air intake system. It will most likely be a cast aluminium chamber roughly the length of the engine and with outlets for each cylinder going to the engine.

Q: What do you call those rubber/metal strips on the rear door windows of a VW Golf MK4?
Basically the strip on each windows goes from the bottom of the window to the top. Mine have rust on them on either side and I want to replace them. Just need to know what I am looking for before I contact the scrap yard.

A: The name your looking for is window glass guides.

Q: My vw golf mk4 1.6 makes weird engine rev and steering noises, whats wrong?
I own a mk4 golf 1.6 s with 62000 on the clock. The engine recently started to make weird 'whirring' noises when I rev the engine. Also, when I turn the wheel, the power steering makes load 'whirring' noises, sounding like if its struggling. What can be the problem?

A: The noise is the power steering pump. Check power steering fluid. If it's low, the noise is cavitation (the pump is sucking air). If the fluid's OK, then the pump may be failing.

Q: What is the maxium tyre width a vw golf mk4 can accomodate without arch modifications?

Q: my vw golf mk4 is leaking, the water seems to only be on the floor of the rear drivers side footwell. any idea
i cant seem to see any place it could be coming in at. so it is hard to know the cause.

A: Check the door seals

Q: Is there any website that let you download a manual to tell u how to replace a radiator for VW Golf MK4?
or does anyone know how to do it?

A: If you need to ask then you should not really attempt it yourself because if you fail to fit it properly or fail to bleed the system properly you could do serious and expensive engine damage. And whatever you do don't forget the correct antifreeze since it is needed for corrosion protection as well as frost protection.

Q: What is the difference between the VW Golf MK4 150bhp model and 180bhp model (apart from the power!!)?

A: It'll be different engines or different engine management or different turbos, can't really tell. Chances are the 180bhp 1.8t has a bigger turbo.

Q: I got a vw golf mk4 and i need to know how to fix a locking mechanism in the rear passanger door?
reg yu03uzv 5door hatchback metal casing underneath door panel. it is a common problem with them it is a common problem with them how to dismantle it

A: First take off the Window winder, from the C clip if its a manual or remove the blanking plate on the door card if its electric. Remove the rear door card, by prizing it gently away from the door sub frame. Remove any handles, glove compartments on the door. Ensure the window is up when you do this. I cant quite remember whether you need to remove the drop glass on these to expose the lock assembly, so you'll have to do that next once you've exposed the door inner if it is obstructing it. Now some of the lock assemblies have a very thin 13mm nut on the inside of the lock assembly and some have a 'C' or a 'U' clip supporting them. You have to remove this with clip pliers if you have them or a long thin flat ended screwdriver if you dont (far more difficult). Next remove the screw retainers holding the door handle assmbly on the outside of the door. It might be an idea to tape some newspaper or a duster to the door before hand to protect your paintwork incase you slip with the tools. Theorettically the assembly should now be loose in the door. the last thing you'll need to do to remove it is to remove the actuating rod that goes from the lock assembly to the door catch and any 'central-locking' mechanism wires that there might be attached to the assembly. Once all that's done it should come out the front of the rear door skin? THIS IS A VERY DIFFICULT AND FIDDLY JOB AND SHOULD ONLY BE ATTEMPTED DIY IF YOU HAVE GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF MECHANICS!!! You will almost certainly cause more damage to your car than the cost of a professional repair if you don't have this knowledge. I'm all for people trying to save some money with their cars and their servicing and maintenance but, You have been warned!

Q: how do i remove the factory grill on my mk4 vw golf?
I want to remove the original front grill on my vw golf and replace it with a badgeless carbon fiber one. Also it is a 2004

A: Well, the best answer is to buy a Bentley manual. Worth it's weight in gold. But, on my 1999 Mk4 Jetta, it's a matter of popping the hood and removing 5 Torx screws. You can get Torx sockets for a ratchet at Sears.

Q: how do i change the door mirror assembly on a VW golf mk4 manual adjustment?
how do i het to the inner nut ???thanks

A: it would be easier to change the whole mirror, simply take off inner door car, and prise of the plastic cover over the three screws, undo the three screws to remove the mirror.

Q: Where to ground on a VW Golf Mk4?
Hi guys, Where's there to ground a wire on the above car? It's for an amp in the boot but i've looked & can't find any bolts, the boot itself isn't even metal i don't think, more like hard plastic, even the slot where the spare wheel goes. Obviously this cable is very short so what's the next best thing to do in this situation, drilling would be a last resort i hope. There must be a bolt i've missed? Thanks in advance. _____________________________________ Thanks, How do i know there isn't something underneath? :) Will any metal bolt do?

A: if you want to ground a amp then just sand down to bear metal any where in the car as long as its down to bear metal drill a hole with a self piercing screw and all you do is bolt the ground wire to there from the amp

Q: What size speakers does a VW GOLF MK4 2002 need?
hi there, Had loads of different answers about this. Some say 13cm, some say 16.5 cm and some say 17cm. Which is it? I want to replace the standard front and back speakers. Preferably, i would like to put 16.5cm speakers in if they fit Will they, though? Please let me know.

A: This vehicle has eight speakers in it, so they are of various sizes throughout the auto. Best bet is to use a website such as Crutchfield or the like and then find out what size speakers they say will fit your car. As an aside, I have an entire Monsoon system from a 2002 GTI [wiring, amp & all speakers] that is in perfect condition and would drop right into your Golf [I had the exact same Monsoon system from the factory in my 2000 Golf GLS when I bought it new]. It's super-sweet :) Let me know if you're interested. Check the link below for proper speaker sizing otherwise:
