Q: No outside temperature indicator on 2002 VW Jetta?
I have a 2002 Jetta GLS 1.8T and I was going through the manual and it said there should be two buttons on the wiper arm to turn on the temperature indicator, but mine does not have the buttons. Is there another way to get it on there, if so, How? Also, is it not all models that say it should have one that actually come with one?

A: the Jetta ambient air temp sensor is located behind the drivers side lower grill, pull the grill off, and look inside, the sensor will have two wires going to it, and the tip will look tike a pencil erasor sized nub with three "petals" around it, it is made of black plastic, if the sensor is not there, you don't have one!!!

Q: Driver's side mirror change on a 2002 VW Jetta? How to?
I need to change out my driver's side mirror on my 2002 Jetta. I thought it wa a simple job. get door panel off, take speaker off, change mirror and reassemble. I got stuck on step one. There seems to be a skrew behind the power window button panel. I got the panel off around the sides, but something is holding it basically in the middle. Can anyone give me step by step instructions?

A: I'm surprised that you have to take the complete door panel off to get to the mirror, as long as you can get to the bolts that hold the mirror on it's a simple operation, you should be able to pull the door panel out far enough to be able to get to the nuts without taking the door panel off completely.

Q: Removing the door panel on a 2002 VW Jetta Sedan?
I am changing all my speakers in my 2002 VW Jetta. I'm starting on the passenger side front door, because that one is busted. I removed all the screws from the outside and pulled it off the top but it seems to be stuck on something around the armrest area... I've read other bullitens but they don't go into much detail on how to pry it apart. I just don't want to break anything on it... If you can help, please write in detail. I am only 17 years old trying to fix my car!! Pictures would be a great plus! Thank You!

A: Here's a link for a 99 Jetta. But it should be a very similar process. Hope this helps...

Q: How do I open the hood in a VW 2002 Jetta? What button do I press? HELP?
How do I open the hood in a VW 2002 Jetta? What button do I press? HELP

A: Sit behind the steering wheel, and then look down by your left foot. There should be a big plastic lever down there. It's NOT a button under the hood, but a big lever inside the car.

Q: I recently purchased a 2002 VW Jetta and had a question on synthetic oil?
I was told to use synthetic oil (5w-30 to be specific) and to do it every 5000 miles. Is synthetic oil better for vehicles and what is synthetic oil made from?

A: Synthetic oil is required for most VW's built since 2000, with the exception of the 2.0 liter NON turbo 4 cylinder motor. Even the 2.5 liter 5 cylinder motor is recommended for synthetic oil as well. I've personally used synthetic oils for over 15 years, using such brands as EON, (now called NEO), Amsoil, Redline, Castrol, Mobil 1, Shell synthetic as well, so I have some experience with these products. [ I just sold a car that has used synthetic oil in it from almost new (it has 222,000+ miles on it) and still goes 5,000 miles before needing any oil added to it.] The fact is that synethetic oils no matter what the base stock is all the following characteristics: 1) Lower pour point temperatures, in other words, the temp that the oil can still flow without becoming a jell. In most synethetic oils, the pour point can get as low as -50 degrees F, verses a natural base oil that might get to -20 degrees F. 2) Higher temperature protection: some synthetic oils can still pour out at 550 degrees, vs a standard natural oil which usually will start jelling out at 300 degrees F. 3) Ability to flow into tighter spaces and leaving a ultra thin coat of lubricant even after the oil has drained off the metal. 4) Ability to hold contaminates in suspension for longer periods of time and larger amounts than regular oil before the oil becomes "used up." 5) Longer drain intervals, some as long as 15,000 miles.. Most of the oils are made from two different base stocks: ester based or synthesized hydrocarbons. NEO, Redline and I believe Amzoil are ester based stock oils, while the most "common" Mobil 1, is a synthesized hydrocarbon product. There is also a third type of base stock for synthetic oil called Polyalphaoletin (PAO), which is approved mainly for an additive package to oils, but can be used alone. I don't know of any synthetic oil on the US market that uses a 100% base of PAO. Synthetic oils are not new, the Germans used this at least as early as the early 1940's and during the 1950's Union Carbide sold a synthetic oil on the US market under the Prestone label, which was better known for their long life coolant, but it was too expensive and withdrawn from the market. Today, most transmission fluids are 100% synthetic fluids, which explains why they are so expensive (up to $25.00 per quart!) Your VW does require a oil that will meet the VW spec 505.001, or 501.000, which only Mobil 1 European formula or a specially labeled Castrol oil (not the regular synthetic oil). Hope this helps, a car nut.

Q: How do you change a headlight on a 2002 VW Jetta?
The manual said to take it in to the dealership but I don't want to do that.

A: Remember to never touch the bulb with your fingers! http://www.monkeyouttanowhere.com/thoughts/archives/2005/09/01_12_40.php

Q: Question on 2002 VW Jetta check engine light?
I have a 2002 VW Jetta and whenever there is a heavy rain fall the check engine light will flash off and on. It ends after a while but it still worries me. What causes this to happen and how can I fix it inexpensively?

A: Its your coil. Had the same problem on my 2001. If it is cracked it will make the engine miss or jump. The easiest way to test it is to spray the coil with a hose and if it starts to miss then its the coil. This is a pretty common problem and is easy to fix. Kind of pricey though! 400-500 bucks

Q: How do I disconnect the power cable for the front passenger door of a 2002 vw jetta?
I know you gonna laugh racefish. Yes I'm taking the car appart to put it back together. Was a right off. Thank you for your help. The connector is really out of reach. The back door harness was a snap. I am tempted to cut the cable off as long as I can and soder the new wire on. Yeah racefish you think I'm nuts.

A: If I remember right, you would need to take off the kick panel on the rt. side. There should be a connector under there that feeds the door. Then there's a grommet that needs to be pushed out on the body side that is a weather seal. By the way, if you have an automatic, the transmission control module sits under the passenger side carpet. It's a good idea to take up the carpet and punch a couple of holes in the footwell to let any moisture that accumulates there out. Since the kick panel will already be off, the process is halfway done. Actually, these cars can be really cool if you put on a body kit. Get some decent wheels, get rid of those stupid bolts and get studs so you don't throw your back out changing a tire.

Q: How do I change a glo plug on a 2002 vw Jetta?
I need to know the basics of how to change and also it says my cylinder 3 is the one do I count from left to right or right to left?

A: You count the cylinders from the passenger side frnt to drivers side; so the cylinder closest to the right frnt fender is cylinder #1, then the next is #2 etc. After removing the glow plug, look at to see if the tip or wire is eaten away, if it is, you might have an injector that is dripping and not spraying correctly at start up. If it is eaten away, then the same thing is likely to happen again. Add some injector cleaner to the fuel; there are some brands designed to work with diesel motors, be sure and replace the diesel fuel filter every 20,000 miles as called for the owner's manual. Also drain the filter every 10,000 miles, to remove water and other garbage is also called for by the manual. Water is the #1 enemy of injectors and can cause them to rust or restrict flow and make the injector drip instead of the proper spray pattern. If the injector is dirty, sometimes with a diesel pop tool and the correct solvent they can be cleaned; that is a job for a shop. Hope this helps, a car nut.

Q: what are the factory colors of a 2002 vw jetta???
i have a 2002 jetta and i want to know what the factory colors are so i can paint it a factory color.

A: Go to the website.

Q: How do I remove the bumper cover from my 2002 vw jetta. What are those black braces called on the fenders?
that the bumper fits over. They need to be replaced. Would be nice to not call it a "thingy"

A: The black pieces on the side are the bumper cover side support guides. To remove the cover you will have to first remove the grill with the vw emplem, then remove the screws on the front of each wheel well, 1 in each front lower (outer) grills (they pop off) then a couple on the top. When you put back together make sure that the sides go into the guides otherwise they will stick out on the sides.

Q: how much does it usually cost to repair/replace the front bumper of a 2002 vw jetta?
its not totally broken, but with probably need replacing. but im optimistic about maybe it being able to just be reattached because a few of the screws around the front driver side headlight are broken off. and the plastic piece that goes around the wheel well is broken, too.

A: I have no experience with a Jetta, but I replaced a Passat bumper for $75 by locating one at a junkyard that was the same color and was in good condition. I had to remove the headlight assemblies and it took about 3 hrs (!) but it worked out great. A new one is going to cost several hundred with at least that much in labor. Try the junkyard!
