Q: 2005 VW Jetta Exhaust Warning Light has come on - what does this mean?
It isn't blinking, it's just on. It only just came on today and I have no idea what this means - I've never had this come on before. Thank you! We have a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty, would this be covered?

A: more than likely this is indicating your O2 censor is failing. this problem is frequent in all jettas from year 2000 and up. however it not limited to this. your best bet before taking it to a mechanic (who will find a way to screw you over!!!) is to bring it down to your nearest major auto parts dealer like AUTOZONE because these places offer free engine diagnostic tests. what they do is hook up their testing tool to your computer chip. the computer chip will send the code for whatever is wrong to the computer tool they have and they will then look up what the code represents. you will have then pinpointed your problem. as for the warranty...it would depend on whether or not it is a limited warranty. if it is....you would have to find out what the problem was first and then find out if it is covered by the warranty. but if it is a full warranty.....then you'll be covered no matter what it is.

Q: Is it easy to change a fuel filter in a 2005 VW Jetta ?
My car has been "missing" a lot lately, and I just got a few things ($420 worth) done at a VW dealer. It's still missing. I wonder if it could be a fuel filter, and if so, can any neighborhood motorhead do it ?

A: Not likely to be a fuel filter. But it does need to be replaced every 40,000 miles. Right rear of the car, under a black shield that you can get out of your way removing 2 10mm nuts. The shield won't come completly off but you can move it out of your way at that point. Then there are push pins on the lines that retain the hose to the filter. Be careful as it will squirt a little gas when you relieve the pressure. Then take out the two 10mm bolts that retain the filter bracket. Then slide the filter out. Put it back in the same direction or your car while really have problems. I really need to know what size motor you have. If you have a VR6 then you have one coil. A 1.8 has 4 coils. Coils go bad all the time. You could have a bad sparkplug (cracked, from over tightening, or dropping it, wrong brand) You could have a bad plug wire. You could be putting 87 octane gas in it. Or there is even a software flash available at the dealer for misfires. At night open your hood and with a spray bottle, spray your coil/coils and sparkplug wires. If one is bad you will get a small blue arc and a noise as it shorts to ground (misfires)

Q: Maintenance for 2005 VW Jetta?
I would like to know where I can find a schedule for maintenance on my 2005 VW Jetta. I just need to know what parts/services need to be changed/done at certain mileages.

A: Easy as following the link below. And when you input your car and mileage, it will show the list, but on the bottom it gives you the option to see the ENTIRE maint. schedule and mileage intervals. You can also ask at the VW dealership if they can provide you with a printout that includes their fees, like mine does. Though I would never take it there because the fees are outrageous. I do all the belt / pump / filter work myself using the Bentley repair CD, or send it to an indipendent shop for the serious internal stuff. Some parts however should be changed that aren't listed on there, such as the water pump along with doing the timing belt. Not just the timing or V belt alone, since you have to remove the front of the car anyway to get to the timing belt, it only makes financial sense to replace the water pump as well, since it has more of a habit of failing before the belts do. And I noticed on viewing the entire maintenance schedule for your car, it made no reference for replacing the timing belt (if you have the 1.8T engine), only checking it. That is wrong. VW should correct their list, because the timing belt should be replaced at 75,000 miles(sticker / metal spec tab under your hood) or 105,000 miles. Don't ask me why it's so contradictory. Most people replace it at 75k. In this case, if you can get a list from your dealership, it will might more accurately reflect what maint. should be done, compared to VWs own website. Just get both lists and compare them. Most of the things are minor stuff that don't need to have time or money wasted on them, with the exception of oil changes / spark plugs, timing belt, brake pads / rotors, air filters.

Q: Why won't a store-bought battery work in a 2005 VW Jetta?

A: A store bought battery will work fine. unless it is a Gell battery All you need is to look on the existing battery for the group number. somethinf like 65, 75 a two digit number. take that to the store and get a new battery of the same group number. the rest is set by the group number. My shop is down the street from johnson Controls Battery plant. I get real good info on Batteries. Fact is that there are only two major battery manufacturers left in the US, Exide and Johnson controls. they make them or contract smaller operations to make them. The battery from the Dealer sat on a shelf for up to a year then it was shipped out. There is a date code burned into the case or laser printed on the case. This also has the group number on it.. If you need a Gel battery that will be advised in the group number or part number on the label of the battery....

Q: Is it worth it to buy a 2005 VW Jetta for 15,000?
My friend threw down 3,000 and is financing the rest for 5 years. Did she get a good deal from the dealership? Cars got about 30,000 miles and warranty oh, and it's automatic if that matters... =)

A: It is worth it if it is the diesel, otherwise it is overpriced.

Q: Help with replacing factory radio in 2005 VW Jetta?
I just bought a 2005 VW Jetta (newer model, actually 2005.5). The previous owner replaced the factory radio head unit with some Sony piece of crap, and I want to reinstall the original factory head unit. I want to make sure the satellite radio and the steering wheel controls still work with the new radio. So the question is, is there a particular VW radio that I need to buy that works with the satellite and steering wheel, or do all the cars use the same radio (regardless of whether they have satellite radio or steering wheel controls)? What else do I need to look for to get everything working like it did originally? Thanks!

A: For the 2005.5 You need to buy the Monsoon deck that came with the car, you can find on on the classifieds of VwVortex, and as far as i know, it should work with satalite radio. If your confused or anyhting with it, you can ask in the forums there. Search vwvortex for info.

Q: how do you check transmission fluid in 2005 vw jetta?

A: If it's an automatic transmission car, there shouldd be a dipstick somewhere near the firewall (probably on the passenger side and may be with a different color handle - probably yellow). Drive the car a few miles, park on a level driveway or road, and pull the dispstick out. The level should be on or near the "Full when Hot" mark. If it's a manual transmission, there won't be a dipstick. You've got to get under the car, look at the transmission and locate a plug. Open the plug and stick your finger in it; if it comes out with black stuff on it, you're probably OK.

Q: Any out there with any thoughts (good or bad) on the 2005 VW Jetta???

A: The good thoughts would be the diesel engine that is highly fuel efficient. If I were to buy one, it would be the diesel. This particular model will be highly coveted since the new one coming out supposedly does not get as good economy and is loaded down with many sophisticated emissions devices. If you do not opt for the diesel, go for the gasoline turbo. Downside is that it requires premium fuel. The normally aspirated 5 cylinder gasoline is okay, but not as exciting. It will run on regular unleaded though. The gasoline versions should get close to 30mpg on the highway.

Q: how to change transmission fluid in a 2005 vw jetta?

A: no, no, no, no!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO not touch the transmission fluid. I work at a dealership! These transmissions are sealed units! They should never need the fluid changed unless you are having a problem and if you are you need to take it to a dealership! Your car is under warranty!!! If you drain your transmission fluid, it takes a special tool to refill the fluid. Trust me, I just charged a customer almost $1000 because he tried to do it himself! Don't do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Q: Question: 2005 VW Jetta (TDI) Brake lights?
My lady friend has a '05 Jetta and her break light seems to burn out at about 10,000 miles. She has lost the Left (drivers side) twice and now the Right side has gone. Has anyone else had this problem?

A: Welcome to the world of German engineering!

Q: 2005 VW Jetta?
I have an 05 Jetta 2.0L. However, there are buttons in the interior that I don't know how to work and my owner's manual doesn't explain. I was going to buy the 05-06 Service Manual but that seems to be very mechanical. Can someone please tell me how I can find out how to work all the bells and whistles in my car???

A: Ask the dealer salespeople. They can't sell more cars by word of mouth if the owner (you)doesn't know how things work. They don't know how many people you know.

Q: If you own a 2005--2008 current model VW Jetta, what kinds of problems have you had?
I often hear about reliability issues of the Jetta. Specifically, what sorts of problems have you had, what incovenience did they cause, and how much did it cost? Would you still recommend it? The Jetta, otherwise, seems to be a good car.

A: Well I leased a Rabbit (same engine and tranny as the Jetta) at the end of December and so far I really like this car. For the price, I don't think you can beat Volkswagen's quality and solid feel. The engine for the 2008 model has been revamped with 20 more horsepower and receives an average reliability rating. I know "average" sounds bad, but if you think about it, average just means it's probably slightly lower in reliability than a Corolla or Civic which you can't kill if you try. So I'd say the Jetta is very reliable. Volkswagen builds a good car. I used to have a '98 Jetta and rarely had anything go wrong with it. It was also fairly inexpensive to repair. As long as you take good care of it, it'll return the favor. I promise. :) Hope you chose a V-dub! Oh, by the way. I would like to suggest VW's 5-speed manual transmission instead of the automatic. A Jetta with a stick shift is a blast to drive. My Rabbit is a stick and it's an awesome tranny!

Q: 2005 VW Jetta battery draining?
My Jetta is having problems keeping a charge on the battery. I just replaced the battery last month and it's still having problems. It needs to be started every few hours or it has to get jumped. Did the test for the alternator (unhook battery while car running) and it still runs. Just trying to figure out what's going on and if anyone has had a similar problem. Thanks! I had the alternator tested at AutoZone. The guy said it could be the problem but could also be something else. I just want to have an idea of what I'm gonna be paying for when I take it to the dealership (*cough*ripoff*cough).

A: This is too easy. The battery only gives a jump start, so to speak, of electricity to the engine. If your battery repeatedly is failing it most likely is your alternator. The alternator keeps that jump start electrical flow circulating to the engine. You'll fly through batteries if you don't go directly to the cause. See, that's why you can disconnect the battery and the car will still run. My guess is that you start the car and then disconnect the battery with out actually driving it or leaving it that way for very long. That doesn't necessarily clarify things. Problem is when your alternator isn't working efficiently the engine drains all the needed electrical source from the battery. A battery is not designed to handle this over load. I hope this makes sense to you. If it had anything to due with your battery cables, you wouldn't get the car to turn over in the first place. Which means obviously your starter is working too. If you can get a jump start, but then run an errand and as soon as you turn the car off, boom, it won't start again. Then I can Guarantee you it's the alternator (also called generator). Oh, and beware taking it into the manufacturers dealer ship. They usually way over charge. Rebuilt Alternators work just fine and cost much less. Unless you are rich and just want to empty your pockets out. (kidding of course) If on the out side chance you have an electrocal source like a wire that is not connected properly then you could have an off and on issue. That rarely happens in newer vehicles though. Your ride is only 3 years old, so it's not very likely. Electrical auto issues do bite though. That could be as simple as a fuse (we always hope) or as complicated as a line that needs to be traced down. Again, though. Your car is SO new, that would be a rareity. Not as likely the source of your problems.. It's always easier to figure what's wrong with a car when you can see it for yourself. Plus I like the older cars as they are easier to work on. Not to mention, I just don't like the sound of computerized brakes (for example). I have a hard enough time on my personal computer. I just hope some of this information is helpful to you.

Q: Should i get a 2005 VW Jetta or a 2005 Audi A4??
Im about to buy a new car.. which one should i get???? price doesnt matter.. which is better?

A: This is a very easy question.. go with the 2005 VW Jetta. I have heard some bad stuff about the Audi's. I'm also a really big Jetta fan. Also, if price doesn't really matter, get a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta TDI (It has a diesel engine in it). With this engine in it, you can get over 50 mpg.. and it's not a hybrid! You're so lucky.. I want one so bad haha, especially with the rising gas prices everywhere. Good Luck! Go with the Jetta!
