Q: How do I know if all recalls are completed on my used vw jetta i just purchased?

A: If you get the complete VIN from your vehicle (located on an insurance card, registration, drivers door jamb, or lower drivers side corner of windshield on dash), you can call any VW dealer and they can check for outstanding recalls for you. They will do this for free and it only takes a couple of minutes.

Q: Should I buy this used 2000 VW Jetta GLS?
I am possibly going to buy a used 2000 VW Jetta GLS tomorrow. However, I have never had a VW before and wanted to get other opinions on the car. It is in good to excellent condition, everything has been changed (timing belt, tires, etc.). It has: -Leather interior -CD -moon/sunroof -automatic -84,000 miles -tinted windows The asking price is $7000. Is it worth it to buy this car? Any Jetta owners out there that may have any tips, pros/cons?

A: VW Jetta's are unreliable they need more repairs than similar cars 2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.0 12/07/2007 By: Juan Owned: 5 years Cons: The ashtray on the back broke very easily. After I changed the audio system the electrical system of the car started to fail, saw this happening on a friends Golf too after he did the same. Some failures with the power windows and the trunk lock. The area for holding cups in the glove compartment must be a joke. The glove box door broke. The center armrest compartment latch broke. The 2.0 engine needs more booting power. I am not rich, in my opinion it is expensive for a car this size. Okay...glove compartment door broke. cup holders over stereo (cold drinks sweat over the auto shifter. The transmission has been replaced twice now. First at 9k miles and again at 40k. My mechanic has been telling me since it's had the first trans prob that these cars are notorious for faulty transmissions in the autos and to get out of it. Does burn engine oil quickly, maintenance is expensive considering this is a VW assembled in Mexico. Parts are pricey for this. You pay Audi prices for almost everything on it. Front door lock doesn't work and I have to unlock it several times before someone can open it. I won't pay to have the little things replaced anymore. It's not worth the money. I do not recommend buying one used. My mechanic told me that VW doesn't honor the 100k drive train warranty to second owners. Luckily I was the first owner so VW replaced my transmission twice before the warranty was up. But it should never have been a problem for a new car. Great car if you are buying new and have every intention of trading it in or selling it with two years or so. That's what I should have done! I will miss the drive but not the mechanics. My mechanic told me that a girl had the same car I have gls 2.0 2000, though she bought hers used. The transmission in hers needed to be replaced at 40k miles and VW would not replace hers through the warranty bc she was a second owner. So she was stranded with out her car (that she had just purchased) until she could pay for a new transmission. Keep that in mind if you are considering a used VW. Only buy these new, I am telling you. I am glad I did.

Q: Is the VW Jetta a good car to buy used?
Hi , I will soon be in the market for a used car for my son. The only car he wants , and he has made it quite clear is a VW Jetta. So far i hear that they are grat cars, but i was just wondering if anyone had any advice, you know like things to look out for in certain Jetta models? _---Thank you

A: I just bought a vw passat. Fun to drive but you will probably have some high maintenence bills in the future. Vdubs are expensive for repairs, not straightforward for repairs either and parts are expensive. I have replaced the Motor Mounts, passenger side axle and some other stuff. I did all of this on my own and the parts ended up being about 150-200 bucks for everything. In the garage it would be about 1700 for all that. The top gasket still needs to be replaced and that is about it. It is very fun to drive but they are prone to maintenence. Plus they have this stupid plastic pan you have to take off to do pretty much anything under the car.

Q: I bought a used 1987 VW Jetta for $500.00 And I couldn't get it to pass emissions?
So I took it to a recomended VW shop and found out that it had a whole bunch of problems that I didn't see when I bought it. I can't afford to buy another car but I need a car. And right now it looks like it's going to be expensive to fix it. I also have a 1991 Plymouth Voyager Van that just needs a new tranny.I know it will make it through emissions but like I said it needs a new tranny. I live in Portland Oregon. I don't know what to do. I'm really depressed about this any ideas?

A: some junk yards will swap you that car for a good tranny, some will install the tranny for you, depends on the junk yard.

Q: I just bought a used 1999 VW Jetta today and the stereo turns on, but the speakers play no sound..HELP?
And YES I turned the sound up.... Are the speakers blown or maybe a blown fuse... I dunno....

A: This may be one of those things where you have to pull the speaker out or find the wiring ends and connect something else that makes music, to it to see if it makes noise.(house speaker wires will do from the stereo,(speakers are low voltage - no worries there) Maybe the car stereo output transistors(how can u tell I been there) are shot. Unit would have to go to a stereoshop for repair.

Q: Will prices of used Jetta TDI's start dropping now that VW has announced rollout of 2008 TDI's?

A: I don't think so until the cars actually start hitting the dealers. Then I know there is going to be a surge in purchasing with fuel costs high and VW doing the whole Dieseloution Tour thing. I think there is a high volume of hold out purchasers as well who don't want to pay an inflated price for the existing used market and would rather just buy new. So demand may keep the prices elevated on the used market. Personally I am hoping that the used market really takes a hit and brings it down to reality. While I am a huge VW fan and specifically like the TDI product its a grave disappointment if you have a certain budget. Even the used market is outrageously high. I hope that dealers nationwide have good stock on TDI models and that helps to bring the used prices down. Interested to hear other opinions to your question as well.

Q: Anyone know where to find used parts for a 2006 VW jetta?
Such as a hood, grill, headlight...Preferably places that sell salvage Jetta parts Besides Ebay and dealerships.

A: 1-800-VWPARTS is a Volkswagen only dismantler that ships UPS give em a call good luck

Q: what kind of gas should i use on my VW Jetta 07?
i have a Jetta 07 and since gas price has been really expensive, i need to know what type of gas i should use. (unleaded, leaded regular, premium...) its a 2.5 engine. and at the gas tank door it says UNLEADED ONLY - REGULAR. i heard people tell me to put unleaded premium, though..

A: Well if the Jetta is a 2.5 I5 engine you can use regular unleaded gas but if the engine is 2.0 I4 turbocharged than you have to put premium gas on it. So just put the recommended gas on your car otherwise you can mess your car and the performance is gonna be terrible than is not good.....

Q: What are some cheaper synthetic oils that can be used in a 2001 VW Jetta 1.8t???
Currently I'm using Mobil 1 Extended performance 5w30. It's very expensive and I would like to use something less expensive.

A: Even if you do correct interval maintaninance, and you use syn oil, you could still get sludge build-up. Keep records in case this happens - because you may get compensated for at the dealer (a huge maybe). In the meantime, idle your car before you turn it off all the way (to cool the turbo), always.

Q: Can anyone recommend a mountain bike rack to use on VW Jetta base bars?
I was thinking about Mont Blanc Barracuda? Don't know if they will work with my base bars?

A: I have had every rack going and my cars have had the dint scratches and rubs to prove it. I would only recommend the tow bar types, any.

Q: Can you swap out a regular engine to a TDI on a VW Jetta, 2000-2002 models?
I am thinking of buying a used 2000-2002 VW Jetta TDI and they are hard to come by. I wonder if changing engines would work

A: It is possible, but it is a lot of work, changing wiring and computer, probably better and less expensive to wait and buy what you want.
