Q: 2004 VW Passat with check engine light from a catalytic converter fault.?
I have this car service at the dealership, which I trust. They told me that the check engine light was from a catalytic converter fault. The light does not go off and they have told me that I need to replace the CC which will cost over $1400. What will happen if I don't get this repair done?
As I said, I do have it serviced at the VW dealership. It has over 100K miles so a warranty repair is not and option.
A: Go to your dealership.
If you are in the US, all emissions components, including the catalytic converter are warrantied for 8 years/80K miles.
If it really is the catalytic converter, your dealership will fix it for you and charge the manufacturer.
Since you have over 100K on the engine, it's possible that the catalytic converter is not working as efficiently as the law would like, and the fault your getting is an inefficiency fault. I can't know for sure because I don't know which fault it is truly generating.
However, in states that require smog checks, you must get the catalytic converter replaced for it to pass.
If your state does not have a smog check, and your more worried about your pocket book than the enviornment, then leaving it alone (assuming it is a catalytic converter inefficiency fault) will not hurt anything else on the engine, it will just end up producing more hydrocarbon emissions than what the law would allow and create more smog.
Q: 2004 vw passat front end exploded view?
Can anyone send me an expoldev view of a 2004 vw passat front end. I am attempting to replace a front clip on one and would like a diagram. Any information would be useful, thanks.
A: Here is the best manual for the Passat. Exploded views galore!!!

Q: What kind of gas does a 2004 VW Passat take?
Regular, mid-grade or premium?
A: For 2000 till 2005, all gasolene VW's except the 2.0 liter (non turbo four) use premium grade fuel or any fuel that has at least 91 octane number (using research + motor octane number divided by 2). You can check your fuel (gas) door lid, it will list the octane number or fuel type required.
It is true that your VW does have a knock sensor; if the road is flat and you don't accelerate too hard, you could also probably get by on mid grade fuel, however, you'd loose performance and probably enough economy to make the usage of premium worthwhile.
You can try a tank or two of mid grade and see how it works for you; keep mindful that VW does recommend premium grade fuel.
Hope this helps, a car nut.
Q: Which vehicle to get and why 2004 VW Passat or 2003 Jeep Liberty?
The 2004 VW Passat- 43,000 miles, great condition, 4Motion $16,995 Me and my fiance both love the style and feel of the car
The 2003 Jeep Liberty- 20,000 miles, 4X4, Sport package
$14,995 We like the idea of an SUV
We are torn between these two, any input from actaul owners would be valued. I know these are two very different vehicles but I can logically find a use for either vehicle. I drive alot about 300 miles a day, for my sales job, so comfort and quality is important. If it breaks down I dont work!!!
A: VW has become alot more reliable in the last 3 years or so. Anything from 02 or newer I wouldn't go for with VW.
My parents have a 03 passat with 4Motion and it is a great car. They have had zero problems with it and there is 90,000+ miles on it. the all wheel drive is one of the best available out there.
But, if you are getting a jeep, I wouldn't get a girly one like the liberty.
Q: 2004 VW Passat fuel pump and speed sensor issues?
at 52,000 miles, car completely died. Dealer first said it was a faulty speed sensor. Called next day and said it was also faulty fuel pump. Can it really be both issues at the same time?
A: Any one of these parts can cause such running problems but uncertain if the two became faulty simultaneously though it's a machine and some of these faults happen sometimes without any warning signs.
Make sure you get the old parts back so you know it was faulty or not.Goodluck.
Q: Will the stereo in a 2004 VW Passat play CD-RWs?
I'm not yet sure if it's the single CD version or the high-end 6-CD Monsoon system, so answers for either one would be appreciated.
A: more than likely no, it should play CD-Rs, most radios that play CR-RWs are after market radios and they usually are able to play MP3s and WMAs as well
Q: How do you change the oil filter on a 2004 VW Passat TDI Sport-please help.?
A: Look down at the front of the engine you should see a plastic cap with grips around the outside and /or a nut head in the centre.
Unscrew sealing cap and remove used oil filter element. Renew the 2 “O” rings as well as the oil filter element. Tighten sealing cap if it has a nut head the tightening torque is 25 Newton metres (Nm).
Drain and change the oil tightening the sump plug to: on 4-cylinder engines with a Sheet metal sump to 50 Nm or an aluminium sump to 30 Nm.
Reset service interval display with adjustment buttons for distance display and clock on dash panel insert
To reset: Switch off the ignition, press and hold the button next to speedometer, switch on ignition, the text service OEL, release the button.
Pressing the distance display button again switches the display to INSP service, for dash panels with digital clock, turn adjusting knob to right. If the dash panel has an analogue clock, pull adjustment knob out. The service shown on the distance display is reset and (- - -) appears on display, switch off ignition.
The original single journey mileage (trip recorder) or the next service will be displayed again after the service interval display has been reset.
Q: How much does new front brakes (with rotors) & sensor reset cost for a VW 2004 Passat 4 cilinder engine?
this is not a turbo
A: I believe a dealer will charge you $500.00 or more per axle. I would call around to a couple different dealerships to see what the labor rate is. First thing to remember is that an estimate does not always mean the price you pay. You do realize you can go to independent service centers that charge less but they will not use the oem parts. Always make sure if it is possible to use real VW parts one there better and two they last longer. Good luck.
Q: 2004 VW Passat or 2004 Volvo S60? Airbags on Passat?
We are trying to decide between a 2004 VW Passat (GLS, 1.8, manual) or Volvo S60 (2.5T) -- both pre-certified and both w/50k miles. Which one is less expensive to maintain? has anyone had problems w/either? Is the Volvo that much safer than the Passat?? Also, have seen conflicting info about passat airbags: do curtain airbags on an 04 passat cover both front and rear passengers or just front?? Thanks.
A: Yes, the curtain airbags are front and rear. 2004 Passats can have 6 airbags and they are very safe. Both are going to be about the same in maintainence cost. Being that I own a 1.8t VW, remember to take into account that you will need the timing belt done in 20k miles. I'm not sure when the Volvo needs it done. You will need to use synthetic oil and premium gas on both cars. DO NOT use anything but this. The bright side to syn. oil is that you only need an oil change every 5k miles. If you use regular gas on a turbo motor like these it can cause engine knocks and that's not good. Other things to keep an eye on if you go with the 1.8T is the coilpacks on the car and also the PCV system. Both have a tendency to be underengineered. Other than that, the 1.8T engine is a great powerplant. I love my Vdub.
Q: I have a 2004 VW Passat with 67,000 miles on it.?
When I go over bumps on the road I can hear a rubbing noise from the front end. It sounds like it could be the shocks or springs. Any ideas?????
New tire in 2006 September
A: check alldata.com. You can search for recalls and technical service bulletins on your car for free. Maybe there is some info there!
Q: my monsoon cd player in my 2004 vw passat will not play a cd i burned. it will play in a infinfty ,lexus why?
A: vw uses the low end of big name electronics [it simply doesn't recognise the recording format] lexus knows it's customers are smart enough to be able to burn their own discs. vw isn't even third world class.
Q: 2004 VW Passat 1.8T GLS Wagon: Premium unleaded only or can you go with regular unleaded? Why? Why not?
My father's thinking of possibly buying one and, what with gas prices, the idea of pumping premium at the pump is a bit of a hang-up for him. I've been doing his research for him as far as things go, and what I've come across on the web seems to indicate that premium is what's needed. Your thoughts and comments?
A: Your research is good.
VW says premium required, and it means exactly what it says. Use of regular can damage the engine, and will also give you lower performance and lower MPG.
The latter may make up for the difference in pump prices.
If you really need to know why, it's because that is the way the engine is designed. One factor in engine design is compression ratio. A higher ratio gives you more power, but requires higher octane gas. So, like most design elements, it's a tradeoff. If you want the maximum horsepower for a given size, you up the compression, and require higher octane gas.
Also use only full synthetic oil with this engine.
Q: anyone have a VW passat 2004?
whats included when you do the 100k service
A: oil,oil filter fuel filter.
Q: Ever owned a 2000-2004 VW Jetta or Passat?
I want a early 2000's model Jetta or Passat, but wanted to know if any had experience with one.. are they good cars? I have heard some bad stuff but wanted more people's opinions.
A: I own a 2003 VW Jetta 1.8T, and I absolutely love my car. I've only had one problem with it, the water pump broke after a day at the track. Other than that, it's a real grin to drive.
If you're going to buy a Mk4 Jetta, I would buy from 2002.5 and up. They made some changes during that time, and worked out MOST of the kinks that came with the earlier cars. Common things to go on VW's are water pumps, window regulators, ignition coils(1.8T engine), and various little things. Any catastrophic thing I've seen happen to a VW, is usually the fault of the owner, past owner, or mechanic.
Other than that, VWs are just fussy cars. If you take care of them with regular routine maintenance, they will go the distance. It may be different where you live, but take a drive and see how many VWs drive by you, you'll be surprised.
Q: How powerful is the 4cylinder version of the 2008 VW Passat?
I have a 6 cylinder, 2004 Passat, but was curious to hear how the new 4 cylinder compares. I swore I'd never buy another 4 cylinder car, again.
A: Your car has 190HP, and the new one has 200HP. The 2.0 engine in the Passat is also a very, very good engine- its used in the Audi TT. The new V6 is 280HP, and in its AWD form quite a quick car for the price. There are obviously better performance deals, but few that are as family and winter (AWD) friendly.
