Q: I am buying a 1980 VW Rabbit AC?
Hi, I am thinking about buying my dream car, which is a 1980 VW Convertable Rabbit. It is in GREAT CONDITION! The only thing that I have a question about is, like most old VW's it has NO AC at all. Is there a way to get AC in this car, and if so, how much would it set me back?

A: Pricey compared the value of the vehicle. You have to be sure the electrical system can handle the extra load in addition to running the plumbing for the extra parts under the hood. Plus the additional drain on the engine doesn't make sense. Enjoy it with the top down!

Q: Where can I find a brake diaphragm for a 1980 VW Rabbit D truck?
I've tried going through Partsbin.com, but they were unable to fill the order. Any suggestions?

A: www.car-part.com

Q: Clutch or Transmission?
I have a 1980 VW Rabbit, and it starts up fine and runs, but it won't move. When I put in gear and release the clutch it won't even stall out or move. Also when I put it in gear I can push it. Any ideas, or do I need to take it somewhere?

A: Something is broken inside the transmission. Take it to a transmission shop or buy a used tranny from a junkyard and replace it yourself.

Q: How much more will you be willing to pay for a cheap little car with a Green House Free sticker on it???
a 1980 VW rabbit got 55 MPG Who's zooming who??? Do I need a $40K car that gets 40MPG with a Green sticker on it???

A: The Diesel Rabbit was a great car, got great mileage and you can run it off of bio-diesel which is a very green fuel. But, they were too small and did not have enough bells and whistles for the US market so VW dropped them. A lot of people talk a lot but do not take simple actions that could improve the world. Take pedal reflectors on bikes. They always fall off and pollute the world where ever people ride bikes, yet, "green friendly" bikers who have removed every other reflector from their bike often leave the pedal reflectors on so that they fall off and liter the world. Moronic. We can make vegetable oil from plants that we harvest from the ocean. This would create enough farm land to produce food and enough bio-diesel to power the planet. We don't do it. What a waste, instead we turn edible food (corn, soy) into fuel while people are starving. Moronic. All these "global warming" "eco-fanatics" just piss me off claiming that governments have to change while they do nothing themselves and do not encourage legislation that would make a difference, like outlawing stupid pedal reflectors or tax breaks and federal funding for bio-diesel made from plants harvested from the sea. Moronic. Farm subsidies and foreign aide when we could just buy the produce at a rate and ship it to nations that have food shortages, Moronic.

Q: What was your very first car?

A: NISSAN SUNNY

Q: Block heaters for diesel engines?
ok i need to get a new block heater for my 1980 VW rabbit diesel but i don't know which is better the magnet type that just sit on the engine block or the oil pan, or the in-line heater that just goes in-line on your heater hoses somewhere i've already been told that the oil dipstick heater is a bad way to go and the reason that i needa new one is that the freeze plug type that comes on the car doesn't work and there hard to find for a 28 year old car so which is better magnetic or in-line thats my question and thx for your help

A: The in line one is better, it circulates warm coolant throughout the engine.

Q: what is your longest lasting vehicle?
I had a 1994 camry that lasted 240k miles before the clutch went and I decided it is time for a new car because it was way old and I owned it since new. I now have a Sentra and have 13k miles in 6 months ... hopefully it'll last just as long haha. Post up your experiences with how long your cars last. Other cars owned : 1990 dodge van- lasted 50k before timing belt snapped 1980'sh vw rabbit - dead at 40k miles 1985 rx-7 ran good and sold it for something bigger (the van) also forgot, had a 2000 hyundai elantra that ran good till a few months ago - it was totalled in a car accident - had 98k miles on it and no problems

A: Garage kept 1972 Dodge Charger 340 automatic 1.3 million miles . 1 set of freeze plugs, 3 timing chains, six sets of valve cover gaskets, 1 rear main seal and pan gasket. Engine oil and filter changed every 3,000 miles, Transmission serviced and rear end lube changed every 50,000 miles. Front end rebuilt 3 times along with rear spring bushings. Other than that, tires belts, hoses, wiper blades and brake jobs. I gave $4,506.29 new for the car. Today it is worth $35,000.00
